Gergely Siklósi Epee Analysis
Просмотров 14 тыс.4 года назад
This is a spotlight video of what makes Gergely Siklósi such a strong and dominant fencer. We take a look at his counter-attack game, his ability to control distance, and his offensive game. He is a truly remarkable fencer who I expect to see at the top of the rankings for quite some time. leland.guillemin@gmail.com instagram: leland.guillemin

    crazy looking at this from 14 years later. I recently disarmed an opponent accidentally, and I began doing research to see if there are any known methods to disarm with simple strikes from the sword, as I did that day, and as you'd done in this video. I hope you are doing well now.

    after watching some Park's bouts, I vehemently agree that Park's second line parry riposte is terrifying and demoralizing, especially if he set up a feint before (which effectively makes it a second intention)

  • @jimharper2180
    @jimharper2180 3 года назад

    Strong parries are often the best defense against a flèche. Limardo-Gascon hardly does anything other than attack with a flèche, while Novosjolov just happens to be excellent at his strong parries. The reigning Olympic champion unfortunately ran into his worst enemy in Budapest.

    The beat 6 disengage is nice isn't it. Must be done as fast as possible though without even looking to see the reaction of the opponent. This against an opponent with a high tip (Italian style epee?) and the seconde pris-de-fer you describe in the Park video against flat bladed opponents would make a good pair of go-to attacks.

    This is a very interesting and useful video. I will be trying to apply this in lessons with my intermediate epee students, in order to help them understand the way that a game can be built by branching options from a common prep. I would live to see more like this for prominent FIE Epeeists: Identifying a favorite preparation, and the actions that are built on it, logical responses from the opponent, and corresponding second-intention actions. The coda on "weaknesses" is also important. Thank you!

    Clear, objective, insightful, straight to the point. I wish every video analysis about fencing were like this. Can't wait for the next one. How about a female fencer? Moellhausen maybe? 😁😁😁

    • @LelandGuillemin
      @LelandGuillemin 4 года назад

      I'm not sure I'll dive into Women's epee soon. I have a list of content I'd like to make, but I can revisit it at a future date. Moellhausen is an amazing fencer, and I've been fortunate to train with her in St. Maur a bunch of times. Aside from her being one of the hardest working, most dedicated individuals I've ever met she is very humble and eager to improve. Her fencing is very risk-adverse as are most of Levavasseur's students, and she has an excellent mastery over controlling distance. If your hand is in range, it will get hit. One of the things that I find very underrated with Moellhausen is how deep her lunge is. Her lunge might be one of the most technically perfect lunges in the game. Her hand is high and her whole body hides behind her guard when her arm is extended. It is deceptively long and incredibly precise. I'll keep this in mind for the future. Cheers!

    Speaking of his balance, I'D like to also point out (as far as I can see in the video) the small size and tightness of his footwork. This lends him greater balance and allows him to change direction explosively. The same can be said for his step-lunge; the smaller, more upright lunge (reminiscent of foil or sabre lunges) allows for either a quick recovery (3:13 with Santarelli) or an immediate remise ( 3:40ish with Verwijlen). This lends him lots of flexibility in action choice. That why your coach tells you to stay straight when you lunge kids! And to develop hella strong core muscles. Great analysis, looking forward to seeing more soon ;)

      I've thought about doing that, however in one of the videos I made in 2015 a fencer got upset with me because the video exposed his biggest weakness... I don't want to upset anyone, I just want to showcase the best fencers. My methodology to beat Siklosi would be to wait for him to either fleche or do his 6 beat disengage lunge and just parry 8 the second I feel pressure on my 6. With a lead you just have to not take any risks and be prepared for his two strong actions.
